Neil DeGrasse Tyson Finds Krypton

That's right folks you read that right. I for one am a huge fan of Dr. Tyson's, and a pretty big Superman fan as well. So when I learned about this cameo in Action Comics Superman #14 I had to say something about it. Dr. Tyson has found Krypton for Superman, literally. Well not really, but DC did approach him to find a red star that could be the sun of Kal El's birthplace. And of course he delivered the goods.

Krypton is found 27.1 light-years from Earth, in the southern constellation Corvus (The Crow), says Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the American Museum of Natural History's Hayden Planetarium in New York City. The planet orbits the red dwarf star LHS 2520, which is cooler and smaller than our sun.

Tyson performed the celestial sleuthing at the request of DC Comics, which wanted to run a story about Superman's search for his home planet.

"As a native of Metropolis, I was delighted to help Superman, who has done so much for my city over all these years," Tyson said in a statement. "And it's clear that if he weren't a superhero he would have made quite an astrophysicist."

So there you have it folks, we now know where Krypton is, or was. Yay science.

Disney Buys Lucasfilm/SW Ep 7 Planned for 2015

So Disney has bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion with producer Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm co-chair becoming president. Oh and they are planning for Star Wars Episode 7 to be released in 2015. At first I was hesitant to be excited about this but then I was the same way when Disney acquired Marvel, and look at how awesome the Marvel movies have been. So I am a bit excited to see what could be done with Star Wars with the right direction. Look to the Clone Wars series to see what SW can be with a great team behind it. So let's just wait and see. I have moderately high hopes. Let's not get them too high though, we can't forget the prequels.

Breast Milk Contains Cannabinoids 

What are cannabinoids you ask? Ever heard of THC, the primary active component of Marijuana? Some major scientific studies have discovered mother's milk contains cannabinoids similar to Marijuana. Now we've known for some time now that our bodies contain cannabinoid receptors in our brains and cell membranes, but now we're starting to understand how they work.  

Cell membranes in the body are naturally equipped with these cannabinoid receptors which, when activated by cannabinoids and various other nutritive substances, protect cells against viruses, harmful bacteria, cancer, and other malignancies. And human breast milk is an abundant source of endocannabinoids, a specific type of neuromodulatory lipid that basically teaches a newborn child how to eat by stimulating the suckling process.
If it were not for these cannabinoids in breast milk, newborn children would not know how to eat, nor would they necessarily have the desire to eat, which could result in severe malnourishment and even death. And because science is finally catching up in discovering how this amazing cannabinoid system works, the stigma associated with marijuana use is, thankfully, in the process of being eliminated.
These include their ability to promote proper energy metabolism and appetite regulation, treat metabolic disorders, treat multiple sclerosis, and prevent neurodegeneration, among many other conditions.

Now that we are beginning to understand these better we can hope that before long marijuana will be legalized, even if it is only for medicinal use. There are far too many benefits that come from Marijuana for it not to be legally accessible to all people, and there are little to no detrimental effects. It's time for people to wake up and recognize there is no reason for Marijuana to be illegal.

SS:  Liquid Plumber For Your Blood Vessels.

Researchers have developed these tiny particles that seek out blood clots and dissolves them. As we all know blood clots cause all kinds of bad times including strokes and that's no good for anyone.


Looking for a better approach, biomedical engineer Donald Ingber of Harvard University and colleagues turned to nanoparticles. Modeled after platelets—cells that circulate in the blood and help stop bleeding by forming clots—the nanoparticles are less than 100 nm wide and made of synthetic polymers stuck together like a ball of wet sand. Like platelets, clumps of the particles flow freely in the blood and gravitate toward blocked vessels by sensing a change in blood flow. Once there, they break apart into individual particles that stick to the clot, releasing a drug called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) that dissolves it.

Science Sunday:  Live For 15 To 30 Minutes Without Breathing

So researchers have come up with this "potion" of gas filled microparticles that can oxygenate blood quickly. So you have a blocked trachea they can inject this and have 15 to 30 minutes to get shit done without the risk of cardiac arrest or brain damage. This is some cool ass futuristic shit right here.


John Kheir, MD, of the Department of Cardiology at Boston 
Children's Hospital says,

"The microparticle solutions are portable and could stabilize patients in emergency situations, buying time for paramedics, emergency clinicians or intensive care clinicians to more safely place a breathing tube or perform other life-saving therapies." 
"This is a short-term oxygen substitute -- a way to safely inject oxygen gas to support patients during a critical few minutes," he says. "Eventually, this could be stored in syringes on every code cart in a hospital, ambulance or transport helicopter to help stabilize patients who are having difficulty breathing."

Awesome Punisher Fan Film 'Dirty Laundry'




So here is a great Punisher fan film with Thomas Jane returning to the role. I loved Thomas Jane as Frank Castle and thought 'The Punisher' was a great film. Ron Perlman is also in it and it has some great Punisher style violence. Here's what Jane had to say about the film.

Ron Perlman Makes A Boy's Dream Come True As Hellboy.

Spectral Motion and Ron Perlman teamed up with Make-A-Wish to make little Zachary's dream come true. Zachary wanted to meet and become Hellboy. Ron Perlman is one of my favorite actors and this makes me love him all the more. More pictures after the break.


Zachary loved his visit for two very special reasons. It was Zachary's wish to meet Hellboy and also to become Hellboy. When the Make-A-Wish Foundation contacted Spectral Motion with this request, Mike thought it would be fantastic to have Ron Perlman reprise his role for the day. Ron loved the idea and donned the makeup once more (with the assistance of Lufeng Qu and Eden Elizalde) and also ordered a Hellboy sized meal of burgers, shakes, and fries for Zachary and his family and the entire Spectral crew to enjoy. Later in the day, Zachary was transformed into Hellboy with the assistance of makeup artists Lufeng Qu and Neil Winn. Both of the Make-A-Wish days were a complete thrill for the families of the children, as well as for the crew at Spectral Motion!

The Dark Knight Returns Sneak Peek Featurette 



So if you don't know, I love Batman.  Batman is my all time favorite "Super" hero.  And "The Dark Knight Returns" is my favorite Batman book. It really made Batman into the character he is today.  
So here is featurette on the upcoming animated movie from DC.  Check it out.


The Dark Knight Returns is set in a near future where Batman is retired and Gotham City has slid into a dystopian state ruled by a gang of hooligans called The Mutants. The 55-year old Bruce Wayne is forced to don the cape once more, this time partnering with a female Robin to not only stop the Joker but keep the peace when the city falls into chaos after being hit by an electromagnetic pulse.

Mars To Have Dutch Settlers By 2023

That's right folks, Dutch company Mars One has a plan to have a settlement on Mars by 2023. They plan to send up a team of four, and then send up more people every few years to build the population. 

The idea is to first send rovers, which will stake out a good site for a settlement and then build out living units. In 2022, the crew will take a "transit habitat" for the seven-month trip to Mars and settle in to their new home. The intention is that the crew will live on the planet for the rest of their lives. Every two years after that, another group will join the settlement to populate the colony.

Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp has a very modern approach to funding the project: media exposure. "We will finance this mission by creating the biggest media event ever around it." He said in a company video, adding, "Everybody in the world can see everything that will happen in the preparations and on Mars."

It's about damn time in my opinion. According to most Sci Fi movies I've seen we're way behind in the space exploration department. This is a huge step for the human race. Not only will we have put people on our neighboring planet, but we will have a growing settlement there. I'm excited for the future, and I'm happy to be living in it. Science Sunday: Scientists Rewire Rat's Spinal Cords

 

That's right folks.  Swiss scientists have been successful in rewiring the spinal cords of rats.  They use chemical and electrical therapy to get the damaged spines firing again.

First, Courtine and colleagues injected the rats with a chemical cocktail that binds to dopamine, adrenaline and serotonin receptors on the spinal cord’s neurons. This replaced the neurotransmitters that would normally be released in healthy spinal pathways. A few minutes after priming the neurons, the team stimulated the rats' spinal cords through electrodes implanted into the spinal canal. This sent electrical signals to the roused neurons. Then the rats needed to be trained to use their limbs again. Within a week of their injuries, the rats were on treadmills, forging new neural connections.

Human testing is set to start within the next two years.  This is some cool shit in my book.  and from the sounds of it, it doesn't take too long to get results.  Hit the link below and read the whole article.  It's very interesting.

Starship Troopers: Invasion

New 'The Dark Knight Rises' TV Spot.

Here's a new TV spot with a bit of new footage.  I've been hearing a lot of doubts about this movie from people, but I think it's going to be just as good as the first two films.  It could also be better than the first two.  I think people are going to be surprised by what a good character Bane is going to be.  People had their doubts about Heath Ledger playing The Joker, and look how that turned out.  This film stands to be great and I can't wait till July 20th.

Man Wants to Build the Starship Enterprise For Reals.

So some dude wants to build a real life starship Enterprise for space travel.  Systems and electrical engineer, Dan, is the man behind BuildTheEnterprise.org, a website dedicated to making the Enterprise a reality.

'The author, known as "BTE-Dan," isn't an expert in the field, but he's put together a huge wealth of information on current research that could be used to build the ship, how much it might cost, and what would have to be changed or scrapped to turn Star Trek's vision into reality.'
“The proposed ship would have an artificial gravity wheel, three ion propulsion engines, and nuclear reactors; it would be able to reach Mars within 90 days.

SS : Augmented Reality Contacts

 

 Move over Google Glasses, researchers have figured out how to put semi transparent leds into contact lenses.  To what end you say?  To receive and display data in images and video projected right on your eye balls.  Once they get a green led made for it they will have full color display.  Now this could lead to all kinds of fun stuff like viewing this here blog while carrying on a boring conversation or something like that.  But that kind of thing is probably a ways off at this point.  Still it's cool right.

So it seems physicists have succeeded in making a Gamma ray lens that was thought to be impossible.  Silly scientists you should know that whenever someone thinks something is impossible it just means they haven't figured it out yet.  

The bending in his group’s experiment isn’t much—about a millionth of a degree, which corresponds to a refractive index of about 1.000000001. However, it could be boosted using lenses made of materials with larger nuclei such as gold, which should contain more virtual electron-positron pairs. With some refinement, gamma-ray lenses could be made to focus beams of a specific energy.

Such focused beams could detect radioactive bomb-making material, or radioactive tracers used in medical imaging. That’s because the beams would only scatter off certain radioisotopes, and stream past others unimpeded. The beams could even make new isotopes altogether, by “evaporating” off protons or neutrons from existing samples. That process could turn harmful nuclear waste into a harmless, nonradioactive byproduct.

Severe Decline in Posts Today.

Well folks it's my birthday so I don't plan on making any posts today.  I gotta get out there and try to celebrate.  Or at least have a good time.  Catch a movie, buy something, who knows.  But I will be back tomorrow for Science Sunday and I've got a couple doosies coming at you.  So everyone enjoy the day as I hope I will.

 

Same-Sex Marriage in the Early Christian Church.

Large post everyone.  Same-Sex marriage is a hot topic at the moment, what with Amendment 1 in North Carolina and all.  But it appears the early Christian church had no problem with it.  There are actual documents with the ceremony laid out.

"Prof. John Boswell, the late Chairman of Yale University’s history department, discovered that in addition to heterosexual marriage ceremonies in ancient Christian church liturgical documents, there were also ceremonies called the “Office of Same-Sex Union” (10th and 11th century), and the “Order for Uniting Two Men” (11th and 12th century)."
 "These church rites had all the symbols of a heterosexual marriage: the whole community gathered in a church, a blessing of the couple before the altar was conducted with their right hands joined, holy vows were exchanged, a priest officiatied in the taking of the Eucharist and a wedding feast for the guests was celebrated afterwards. These elements all appear in contemporary illustrations of the holy union of the Byzantine Warrior-Emperor, Basil the First (867-886 CE) and his companion John."

Archaeologists have discovered new/old Mayan wall writings with calenders that go far beyond 2012.


"The room's wall calculations likely served as a blackboard for scribes, in a society where festivals, rituals and farming were tied to astronomical observations.

Live Action Halo!

Halo movie you say?  Your wrong!  It's a live action Halo web series coming around the time Halo 4 comes out.  Sound interesting to me.

Matt McCloskey, director of franchise business management at 343 Industries, had this to say to Variety.

"Forward Unto Dawn" will play out over five weekly installments, around 15 minutes each, telling an original story about the game's Master Chief and how he inspired a young UNSC cadet who will eventually become a leader aboard the UNSC Infinity spacecraft. Introduction of the new character will tie in with the plot of "Halo 4," while providing a flashback to the beginning of the "Halo" franchise's war between the humans and the evil Covenant.

Tech Tuesday:  Texas to Build Bullet Train

Well it's about damn time in my opinion.  All the other popular countries have bullet trains, why not us.
The Texas Central Railroad is planning to have it done by 2020, connecting Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio.  It's a good deal man, cheaper than flying and damn near as fast.  I guess California and Nevada are wanting one between Anaheim and Las Vegas.  We need much much more.  I would travel more if we had bullet trains going every where.  Go to the link and read the whole story would ya.
